Globally Integrated Semester: Dickinson in Iceland
In the Spring 2021 semester, I enrolled in the globally integrated course, Introduction to Arctic Studies. This course had an extended abroad component in the month of August in partnership with GeoCamp Iceland. This formative experience allowed me to investigate sustainability, social justice, political and cultural elements of being an arctic nation on the forefront of the climate crisis. Our class assisted in fieldwork and learned about Iceland's role in the global arctic stage and leader in renewable and geothermal energy and sustainability.
Studying abroad during the global pandemic taught me about the importance of individual and communal resilience and flexibility. The otherworldly landscapes and geologic wonders of Iceland further my interest in climate work and its implications at an international and geopolitical level.
